toxic_peopleSometimes, you can spot toxic people from a mile away. They’re at the party gossiping and rolling their eyes. They’re the ones who criticize your outfit while asking about your ex. Other times, their negativity can be more subtle and difficult to spot. Toxic people show up in every area of life, but that doesn’t mean they will drag you down with them. Here are some tips on how to avoid toxic individuals and bring in the positivity.
Recognize the Warning Signs

If you think someone in your life is being a negative influence, you can usually trust your instincts. But sometimes toxic people are good at making you think they’re on your side by claiming you’re overreacting when they say or do something hurtful. Keep an eye out for people who constantly complain, criticize everything, or have no problem sharing their cynicism with the room. These people only bring down your happiness and make it harder for you to stay positive.

Practice Compassion

Toxic people can be tricky because you don’t want to ignore someone who needs a helping hand. Sometimes a person’s negativity comes from outside sources beyond their control, and maybe they just need a shoulder to cry on or someone to talk to. Opening yourself up as a support system for these individuals will give you a better idea of why they have such negative energy.

Don’t Take It Personally

If you’ve tried to be compassionate and someone is still sucking out all of your positive energy, it’s time to start taking care of yourself instead. Just tell yourself that they’re the problem, not you, and they don’t have the power to bring you down. They want everyone to share their negativity and pessimism, but they can’t do that if you don’t let them.

Treat Yourself

Taking care of yourself is a great way to preserve your positivity and bring up your self-esteem. If you feel like you’re being brought down by a toxic person, take some time for yourself to do the things you love. Walk your dog, read your favorite book, grab a drink with your best friend, or splurge on that pair of jeans you’ve had your eye on. Being good and kind to yourself will remind you that you deserve to be around good and kind people.

Surround Yourself with Positivity

The best way to kick negativity is to make the choice to be around people who lift you up instead of bring you down. People who make you feel safe, make you laugh, accept you for who you are and show genuine concern make good, positive friends who will make you feel confident and loved. There’s only room for these kinds of people in your life.

Don’t Feel  Guilty

Lastly, shake off any guilt you have after removing toxic people from your life.. If letting a friend or acquaintance go because of their negativity makes you feel guilty, remind yourself that you come first and that you deserve to be happy.
