Here we go again…
It’s here: that day of the year when we take (a bit more) time to show our partner how much we love them. Despite our best intentions, on February 14, it’s easy to make a faux pas. Here are four traps to steer clear of for a successful Valentine’s Day!
1. Being predictable
A(nother) box of chocolates and a bottle of perfume for your other half? Really? However nice the gesture, for the recipient to really appreciate your tokens of affection, it’s important to be creative and use your imagination. Don’t panic, though: it doesn’t necessarily have to be a complicated undertaking. All you need to do is give it a bit more thought! Two suggestions:
– A personalized present: nothing could be better to prove your love than taking the time to make a homemade gift. Channel the artist within!
– Two birds with one stone: why not offer a day of relaxation à deux? Taking the time to step back from the everyday routine is a pleasure we often tend to neglect.
2. Letting a card do the talking
Although Valentine’s Day has a commercial feel to many people, it’s still a nice opportunity to take the time to verbalize your feelings. Too often, partners try to translate their thoughts into words when there is a need that’s not being met and things aren’t going so well. But what about those everyday actions that warm your heart? Your partner probably already knows that you love him, but he likely never gets tired of hearing it…
3. Scrambling to find the last table at the hippest eatery
Rather than spending the evening in a crowded restaurant where you’ll probably have to yell your I love yous to ensure they’re heard through the noise, this year, try something different. Why not plan a nice dinner together in the comfort of your own home? Cooking awakens the senses and feeds sensuality. And who knows? Maybe you’ll discover a new common interest while preparing your sumptuous dinner together. Grab those aprons!
4. Feeling sorry for yourself
We feel you: with all those people throwing their happiness in your face, Valentine’s Day as a single lady can be pretty daunting. Although it may sound like a simplistic view of things, happiness really does start from within. So before breaking down in tears in the middle of the chocolate-and-stuffed-animal aisle, remember that your friends and family love you, regardless of whether you’ve been successful so far in finding your soul mate. In any case, shouldn’t you celebrate how much you love yourself every day?
