Once upon a time, you wanted to write the next great Canadian novel. Or, perhaps you’ve been itching to make a career change. Or, like many, your quest to lead a healthier lifestyle is something you would actually like to put into practice this time around. Whatever your goal, for one reason or other, you still find yourself mulling over the idea rather than acting on it. But now is not the time to sulk! While the demands of our busy lifestyles often leave little time for working up to reaching our personal goals, that’s not to say that the task can’t be done. Below, we bring you four important philosophies to turn that “if” into “when”!
Clearly establish your goal
It’s one thing to desire something, but you have greater chances of getting that which you seek if you clearly define what it is that you want. One way to do this is to write it down, and strategically place that faithful reminder somewhere where you can see it every day. It will be much harder to ignore, and will make it all the more easier to put your plan into action!
Start small
Your goal may seem daunting at first, but taking small steps towards it, as opposed to struggling to accomplish it overnight, will make it easier to attain. If you’re looking to become more active, for example, start incorporating exercise into your daily routine, taking the stairs instead of the elevators, and walking longer distances before delving into a four-day-a-week intense workout routine. Thanks to these small steps, when you do embark on a steady fitness regime, it’ll prove a whole lot easier!
Think positive
The power of positive thinking is often derided, if not dismissed, as nothing more than cliché motivational spiel, but this mantra couldn’t be more true. If you believe that your goal is impossible to reach, well then, you may as well give up before you even begin. Remaining optimistic despite the challenges is the key to attaining your objective. Negative thoughts will only give you more reason to remain complacent, but keeping a positive outlook as you steadily work towards getting to where you want to be will attract opportunities, as well as people, who can help you get closer to your goal.
Be patient
That said, the most crucial point to keep in mind, no matter the enterprise, is to be patient! Few and far between are the success stories that took place overnight. Most people attain their goals after arduous, continuous efforts over a long period of time. And there is no shame in that. If anything, you’ll be all the more thankful when you do get to where you want to be, and will have greater appreciation for the hard, diligent work that went into reaching your goal.
