Can you believe it? We finally saw the end of that never-ending winter! So now, a good spring cleaning is necessary. And when we were given the opportunity to have a microdermabrasion treatment at Montreal-based clinic epiderma, well, our dull-looking skin was excited! We interviewed clinic director Maggie Napoletano, who took the time to answer our questions and give us a rundown on the procedure.
1. What is microdermabraison?
“This treatment is a surface polishing of the skin, giving it a touch of glow and youthfulness. The main areas that are treated are the face, neck, cleavage, as well as the hands. A safe and controlled spray of pulverised microcrystals work to remove impurities and dead skin cells, stimulating the production of new cells, boosting collagen production, and promoting better blood circulation. Introduced in North America in 1996, microdermabraison is a technique that has certainly evolved over the years. Here at Epiderma, the crystals used are natural and contain zero aluminum particles, a unique technique in Canada. The magic ingredient? Baking soda!”
2. Is it painful?
“Since the treatment is done on the surface of the skin (read: non-abrasive), it is relatively painless. However, for people with sensitive skin, it is possible to notice swelling or minor redness, which usually goes away after a few hours. Some people may also feel a slight sensation reminiscent of minor sunburn.”
3. What is the process of a treatment?
“The treatment lasts for approximately 90 minutes. The aesthetician starts by removing any makeup, and then analyzes the skin. Forehead, nose, cheeks… we target the most problematic areas. Then, using a suction device, the face is scanned, first horizontally, then vertically. And the places that require a more specialized attention, we focus more on it. The skin is then cleaned again and prepared for the post-treatment care. First, we apply a thermal mud for fifteen minutes (oh-so relaxing!), a serum, and we finally end with a soothing balm suitable to your skin type.”
4. How does one take care of their skin post-treatment?
“Following the treatment, the skin needs a particular hydration. Moisturizing morning and night is recommended to prevent flaking. It is also possible to purchase the full-range of BIO-epiderma products used during the procedure, both at the clinic and online, Clinical (but online too!) , It is possible to get the full range of BIO- epiderma products used during the procedure, perfect for all skin types. It is also important to stop using any anti-acne and anti-aging products, or anything containing retinol, seven days before and after treatment. Also be sure to avoid sun exposure for 48 hours after treatment.”

5. Why should someone opt for microdermabrasion over a facial?
“Among the array of treatments available for the face, microdermabrasion remains one appreciated largely not only for its efficiency but also its versatility. Of course, much like facials, it cleanses and regenerates the skin. However, microdermabrasion digs deeper into the skin, reducing fine lines, age spots, enlarged pores, and acne scars. The result? Benefits that are much longer-lasting.”
